CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Location Move Into Balance Feldenkrais® Studio, WEEKLY CLASSES at Move Into Balance Feldenkrais® Studio 1335 Gusdorf Road, Suite J, Taos February 24 through March 24, 2010
~ CLOCKS ~ “Finally, self-knowledge through awareness is the goal of reeducation. As we become aware of what we are doing in fact, and not what we say or think we are doing, the way to improvement is wide open to us.” ~Moshe Feldenkrais
Moshe Feldenkrais created a number of fascinating Awareness Through Movement® lessons using clocks. Specifically directing attention to movement relative to the circular reference, with it's evenly distributed numbers, engages the whole of ourselves and refines symmetry in movement. The lessons offer opportunity to recognize asymmetrical movement habits that are at the root of many difficulties and influence our ability to heal. The familiar reference is easy to remember and is a tool you can use to continue exploring on your own. Come challenge your attention and improve fluidity in all action!
~ THE CHEST BASKET CONTINUED ~ As young children we learn our ribs are the bones that stick out in the front when we suck our stomach in. Later we learn they are a “ribcage”. Since most cages we are familiar with are metal, it is easy to think that the ribs are unmovable, or move as one unit. In some languages the ribs are referred to as a “chest basket”, immediately shifting the image to be more alive and mobile. When you look closely you find each rib, (except the floating ribs), has a joint in it, plus joins at the spine and at the breast bone (which also has two joints in it). All the ribs hang from our twelve thoracic vertebrae, dramatically affecting the movement of our entire spine. Ultimately, the chest has more joints, i.e. places of movement, than any other “part” of our body. It's movement, or lack thereof, directly affects the quality and comfort of our overall movement including our strength and flexibility. We will explore this less discovered area of ourselves to recover mobility and gain awareness of the bones and joints that influence our every move.
Sunday, March 21, 2010 ~ 10:00AM to 4:30PM ~ SENSITIVE HANDS ~
The quality of our thinking, action and relating can be profoundly affected by improving the sensitivity and quality of movement of our hands. From birth, rich with nerve endings, our hands and finger tips are gathering information and helping make sense of the world around us. Our movement organizes to move toward, touch and know whatever calls our attention. Once fine motor skills are in place, most people take for granted the remarkable learned dexterity of their hands and fingers, often using more effort than necessary for simple tasks. How are your hands right now? Could they be more at ease? Tense them and feel the effect in yourself. The quality of your hands is a reflection of the state of your nervous system. Awareness Through Movement® lessons are a way to immediately affect your central nervous system. Come spend a day thanking your hands for all they do for you, and feel the difference in your whole self. The experience may be surprisingly global! Upcoming Workshops
Location: Move Into Balance Feldenkrais® Studio “After a lumbar spine fusion surgery I felt like I was in someone else's body and couldn't walk easily. I had debilitating cramps from my hips to my toes for up to 45 minutes at a time. The three mornings of breathing lessons last January were transformative for me. The cramping completely went away.” ~ Joanie Adams Location: Move Into Balance Feldenkrais(R) Studio 1335 suite J, Gusdorf Road Cost: $75.00 If you are interested in a workshop specifically for people who have had hip replacements please contact Prisca WORKSHOP FOR DANCERS A Workshop for Dancers and People who love to move! As dancers we demand far more of our feet than the average person, requiring heightened awareness and skill. With 33 joints and over 100 muscles, our feet have a remarkable structure capable of fine motor skills usually thought specific to hands. Their tremendous flexibility allows for movements in all directions, provides shock absorbency for the body and has a profound affect on the freedom and power we feel throughout the whole of ourselves. Come intimately explore the many talents of your feet, toes and ankles and experience newfound flexibility in your hips and spine! We will: • Wake up the relationship of the feet and toes to the ground to improve stability without tension for a more graceful, effortless carriage. • Clarify the relationship of ankles, knees and hips to recover from and prevent injury. • Increase awareness, flexibility and skill in your feet, toes and ankles while improving overall flexibility. Professionals working with Dancers are invited to attend. For more information on workshops specifically for dancers Click here for details...
